“Stewart Sukuma Concert with the Macao Chinese Orchestra” opens a new chapter of the fusion of Chinese and Western music through cross-disciplinary resonance

MACAU, October 21 - Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the “Stewart Sukuma Concert with the Macao Chinese Orchestra”, integrated in the 8th “Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries”, will be staged on 14 November (Saturday), at 8pm, at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. Tickets are now on sale through the Enjoy Macao Ticketing.

Mozambican singer Stewart Sukuma is one of the most influential figures in his country’s music scene. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he has performed across Africa, Europe and the Americas. He is widely recognized worldwide and he has received a music award from UNESCO. Rooted in Marrabenta, his music blends the elements of Afropop, contemporary fusion and jazz, while his live performances are full of vibrancy and colour, with lively rhythm and melodies. Stewart Sukuma will perform with the Macao Chinese Orchestra for the first time, in collaboration with the Music Director and Principal Conductor Zhang Lie, to interweave the primal rhythms of Africa and the sounds of traditional Chinese instruments, adding a captivating exotic touch to Macao’s musical landscape and creating an artistic dialogue that transcends geographical boundaries.

In addition, Stewart Sukuma will perform with the Nkhuvu Band, presenting the music of the Timbila, a traditional Mozambican percussion instrument inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Made of resonant wood and gourd resonators, sealed with beeswax for tuning, this wooden instrument produces a unique sound rich in “nasal” and “vibrant” characteristics. Indeed, musicians often perform complex and distinct rhythms with their left and right hands, creating richly layered polyphonic effects. Stewart Sukuma will also perform several pieces with the band using percussion instruments, as well as the timbila and the mbira.

The 8th “Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries” is organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, with the support of the Macao Government Tourism Office, the Municipal Affairs Bureau, TDM – Teledifusão de Macau, S.A., and Air Macau Company Limited. The “Stewart Sukuma Concert with the Macao Chinese Orchestra” is also one of the highlights of the Macao Chinese Orchestra’s 2026–27 Concert Season. Through collaborations with musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds, the Orchestra seeks to broaden the artistic horizons of Chinese music and bring vitality to traditional instruments through intercultural dialogue. Spectators with tickets will also be able to enjoy exclusive offers on various activities of the “Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries”.
